When the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) chose Designsensory as an interactive partner to develop a new public website, it was a case of embracing complexity to arrive at simplicity.
The goal was to streamline large amounts of information from many different departments and provide user-friendly access to health information for multiple audiences. Research—including online surveys, focus groups and A/B testing—helped guide the development of the information architecture, design and content.
UTMC is known for outstanding patient-centered care and excellence in nursing and research. The site builds on the center’s tagline, “Wisdom For Your Life,” as a way to share hospital-specific information on the Centers of Excellence as well as health education and support services.
The new site integrates the A.D.A.M. medical information system into the health education section, provides a robust video library and simplifies finding a doctor and making an appointment. A wayfinding feature helps ease hospital visits for patients and families. Other features include a career section redesign and advanced file and document handling in the back-end. Bill-pay, eCommerce and clipboard features facilitate account management, purchasing and saving information.
To easily and seamlessly communicate a vast amount of applicable and important information, each of the six Centers of Excellence has its own microsite. To make the redesign and launch smoother and less complicated, we decided on a phased rollout of the microsites.
Designsensory is currently developing a responsive version of UTMC’s site along with a redo of Insite, the hospital’s intranet. The new design will feature an even cleaner and more user-friendly interface, with a new iconography system.
