Promoting community development.
Poverty, unemployment and economic prosperity are often a cycle. Communities with high poverty and fewer jobs become economically disadvantaged, and economically disadvantaged communities have trouble attracting businesses—perpetuating high poverty and fewer jobs. However, these communities have untapped resources that are valuable to businesses.
The Tennessee Economic and Community Development (TNECD) wanted to break the cycle and showcase these resources by partnering with Designsensory to create overall branding and new economic development websites for 12 of its 21 “distressed” counties: Bledsoe, Campbell, Cocke, Fentress, Johnson, Lake, Lauderdale, McNairy, Morgan, Scott, Wayne and White.
The newly developed county websites are designed to attract companies and corporate site selectors by showcasing the unique advantages of each community. We visited each county and worked with the local government and business leaders to create custom content that highlights each county’s workforce skills, business potential and quality of life. Each website features current industries and successes as well as available locations for new businesses. Our team trained TNECD members on how to manage and update the website with information about new opportunities, achievements and locations.
Emphasizing usability, the websites feature a clean, modern appearance and dark, rich hues. Full-width strips divide the layout into rectangular sections, which breaks up content into more digestible pieces. Our studio production partner, PopFizz, captured each community’s business capabilities, workmanship and quality of life. We also used these photos and videos in the counties’ overall branding.
The websites are responsive and were search engine optimized with relevant and organic keywords specific to each county.
Due to the overwhelming support for the distressed county websites, TNECD plans to partner again with DS to develop new economic development websites for other counties over the next several years.
