Ready to launch its new line of artisan moonshines, Sugarlands Distilling Company came to Designsensory for a responsive website that would not only showcase its fine products but also evoke the spirit of mountain traditions, music and stories.
The site’s immersive images, branded storytelling and letterpress-style typeface honor the people, places and heritage of craftsmanship in the Great Smoky Mountains, where the moonshine is made. Our designers created custom illustrations and chose images that show the beauty, culture and history of the Smokies’ Sugarland region, once considered a moonshiner’s paradise for its natural resources. Senior Designer Matt Montgomery, who worked on the original site, says, “We wanted to create a look and feel that pays homage to the legacy of moonshining and the early frontier spirit of the Sugarlands and the Great Smoky Mountains.”
The headquarters building was another source of inspiration for the design, with wood repurposed from four local Civil War-era barns, including one wall still bearing the barn’s iconic “See Rock City” sign.
If you can’t stop by the Sugarlands headquarters in downtown Gatlinburg, the website’s Shine Finder makes locating the nearest Sugarlands product a breeze. The eCommerce function lets you buy merchandise from the store.
Fun stuff is always happening at the Sugarlands headquarters building. If you’re in the neighborhood, take a distillery tour, do some shopping and stick around for special events. The website’s Happenings section highlights the concerts and storytelling sessions held on the back porch and inside on the back of “The Boss,” a 1928 Model AA truck. The Sippin’ Post blog shares events, recipes and other relevant news.
The MoonShare section provides information about the company’s grants to nonprofit organizations trying to make their communities better places to live.
